Casal Figueira Castelão Adiado Tinto 2019

$52.00 inc. GST

The Adiado Tinto from Casal Figueira is produced from old vineyards of Castelão (50-60 years old). Our vineyards grow at the South side of Montejunto Mountain, near the Atlantic Coast (20 km), where sandy – clay soil, atlantic climate and  are in perfect adequation for fresh, low alcohol, clairet style reds. With Castelão being quite popular in Portuguese contemporary winemaking.

The grapes vinification, again with the recovery of old manual techniques; handpicked and carried in small boxes (not larger than 15 kgs capacity), refrigerated during transport. Arriving at the winery, bunches are stripped off by hand and poured into small lagars. Then are foot smashed. A short cold maceration is done before fermentation. 50% of the wine aged in old barrels during 8-10 months over its lees, with bâtonnage. 50% in stainless steel vat. A light filtration during bottling. No chemical correction & natural ferments. Very low levels of sulphites are present.

Castelão, the grape variety, from old vines. Importer: QED

Dried roses and Earl Grey tea, meaty and ferrous, blackberry, lemon zest, paprika and sea spray. It’s medium-bodied, damp earthy things and perfume of dried herb, chewy and dense, iron and blood, red and black fruit, wild garrigue sort of character, and a savoury finish of fine length. Such a good wine. Recommended.
