Domaine Barmés Buecher ‘Leimental’ Riesling 2018

$74.00 inc. GST

Leimental – Valley of Clay.

Our Leimental vineyard is on a small plateau nestled on a hillside just next to Wettolsheim. The parcel is east facing and covers 24 ares of land in which the roots of the 40 year old vines wind their way down through layers of limestone strata in a clay-rich soil. We produce a racy yet ripe Riesling with good depth and structure. A great wine for laying down.

Description

Domaine Barmès-Buecher, located in the heart of the Alsace region, just a few kilometres from Colmar and Eguisheim, was founded in 1985 by Geneviève Barmès (née Buecher) and her husband François Barmès. They combined the land holdings of their respective families, who had owned vines in Wettolsheim, one of the region’s largest wine growing towns, since the 17th century.

Geneviève and François chose to grow their vines using biodynamic practices, which places the emphasis on a respect for nature, life forces and natural cycles. The Domaine’s 15 hectares were converted to biodynamic growing in 1998 and have been certified biodynamic since the 2001 vintage.

This form of wine growing allows a closer relationship with the terroir and a better understanding of the environment surrounding the vine and the wine grower.

Domaine Barmes Buecher Leimental Riesling 2018
Posted on 02 October 2021.

Leimental vineyard grows 40 year old, organic vines that contribute to this wine. It’s next to Wettolsheim in Alsace. This feels dictionary definition Alsace riesling, with that extra weight and richness on hand.

Scents of frangipani, lime cordial, blackcurrants, candied almond. Flavours match this aroma wheel, slippery texture holds in a lot of flavour; it’s a riesling with some impact no doubt. Powers along and finishes long with a slightly chalky, chewy end. Lingering mushroomy and citrus flavours. Serious feeling riesling, very pent up, probably best drunk as a fully mature wine, so try that. Too much now? Maybe. But good wine.
