Domaine Chevrot Maranges “Sur Le Chêne” Rouge 2021

$99.00 inc. GST

Sur le Chêne is a parcel facing south on a hillside of limestone gravel, planted with fifty year old vines. Made without sulphur to respect the expression of its terroir, On the nose, the Sur le Chêne Maranges offers classic Côte de Beaune red fruits (redcurrants, strawberries, raspberries) plus, more unusually, gooseberry, cherry and scents of mocha and cocoa. In the mouth, there is a great intensity and depth to these same flavours, reflecting the resplendance of the excellent 2017 harvest, with very light vanilla hints of the oak. The wine is unfined and unfiltered. On the palate, it never changes direction and offers its straight line of fresh fruits, solidly constructed on a central tannic theme that is clearly present but will soften after some years in cellar. Strongly-built for confrontations in the kitchen, this Maranges is well up to farmhouse guinea fowl or coq au vin.

Chevrot’s viticulture is biodynamic, and no use of sulphur is made in the winemaking process, solely in bottling.

92 Points by Mike Bennie – Winefront
“Firm and rustic wines of Domaine Chevrot of Maranges. This one sees old oak for maturation, natural fermentation, no sulphur added. This has heady scents of undergrowth, dried herbs, blood sausage. That’s it. Fruit is in the back seat to savouriness, all confident with both hands on the steering wheel. Texture tackles the tongue with plushness then a belt of chewy, powdery dustiness. The finish is all brick dust, iron filings and the acidity you get in fermented saucisson. I found this wine very appealing, old school in a way, but had enough whip of acidity to keep me at it, and fruit, though shy, is pretty underneath the tannin and savoury stuff. Proper.”
