A unique parcel within Rippon, Emma’s Block faces eastward on the lakefront where ancient clay reefs run laterally through fine schist gravels. Emma’s Block is named after the great-great-great grandmother of the current generation of the Mills family, through whom the name entered into the family.

Description
Picked by hand into small, 10kg cases allowing the fruit to arrive at the winery’s sorting table undamaged and intact. Picked and fermented separately in 3, 2-tonne stainless-steel fermenters.
Each parcel is fermented and matured apart before blending. The winery’s resident yeast population (non-inoculated) took 10 days to ferment; and spanned temperatures between 9-30° Celsius.
Total time of skin contact: 16, 23, and 28 days
12 months of new (17.2%) to 4 year old French oak barrels. The malolactic fermentation went through unaided (non-inoculated) in springtime; it was then racked back into barrel and allowed a second winter in neutral barrels before being run directly into bottle without filtering or fining.

Rippon Emma’s Block Pinot Noir 2019

I will stutter here, but the 2019 Rippon wines are stoic. Need time. I usually throw caution to the wind and suggest drinking from the get go for just about all wines, but here, not so. Structured releases, coiled and tight. This is fleshier and juicier that the other 2019 pinot noir releases from Rippon, albeit in degrees. There’s a fine, lacy and yet steely web of tannin draped over the wine, granitic and minerally and very refreshing. Dark cherry, salted plums, alpine herbs and clove-woody spice are the defining elements in scents and flavours. There’s a bit more approachability to this wine, albeit it needs a good airing before getting stuck in. Feels ethereal, gossamer and yet athletic; a nice, fine yet chewy mouthful of dark fruits and spice, that minerality shot through it all. Serious stuff. Excellent wine.
