Woodlands Brook Vineyard Malbec 2018

We’re big lovers of Malbec at Woodlands. We first bottled Malbec separately in 1993 from the Woodlands Vineyard. In 2002 this wine took on the name “Reserve du Cave” before our grammar was corrected by a French chap to “Reserve de la Cave”. We also bottled a Malbec from the younger vines, the last vintage being 2005. This wine continues this tradition, however being made from Woodlands Brook fruit. The Woodlands Brook Malbec plot faces north west on free-draining Wilyabrup soils, the rows are spaced at 2 metres, and the vines 1.8m apart. The soils are Wilyabrup Class 1 – with a clay loam top soil, a bed of gravel and then a bed of white clay. Like all red wines at Woodlands, this wine was destemmed and sorted by our gravity fed system. Once harvested and in the winery, the fruit was delivered to the destemmer by a vibrating hopper, where the stems are removed by a swinging motion. Once destemmed, the fruit passed over a vibrating sorting table. Following fermentation this wine was matured in French oak barrels for 18 months. The wine is a stunningly deep dark crimson. The nose shows an array of dark fruits and white The wine is a stunning spice – classic Malbec. The pallet is bright yet voluptuous, showing a lovely purity of fruit, and lovely weight. The wine finishes with a great balance of fruit and acidity. Best enjoyed over the next eight years, this wine will be best paired with a cassoulet. Only 3200 bottles produced.
